#COUNTERSPEECH – Countering hate speech

As part of the UN Youth of Finland’s Youth Peace Week The UN youth of Helsinki kindly invites you to counter hate speech together with the young and leading experts on the field! Who experiences hate speech and why? With what tools can we counter hate speech? What kind of representation helps us to build sustainable peace?

The purpose of the event is to talk about hate speech and respond to it with counter speech. Counter speech’s short definition is answering/negotiating new spaces from cultural margins with speech acts. We want to respond to the growing negative atmosphere on the social media era with spoken word as well as with political actions.

#counterspeech consists of a panel discussion by experts as well as spoken word performances. The purpose of the panel is to bring youth and experts together to discuss current issues of hate speech and their solutions. The purpose of the spoken word acts, however, is to show that counter speech can also be made through art of words and speech. The first part of the event will be held in Finnish and the second part will be multilingual.
